How to build a fishing rod?
Does anyone know how to build a fishing rod, or the history of it, i seriously cannot find it anywhere. and i have to do an assignment on it, any answers will be great. thankyou. :]
ezcellent Question most people this category hate me because I give advice to build your own rods. It isn’t as difficult as one may think
If you don’t have sufficient tools It can get difficilt but it is fixed very easily
The handle can be pre made of anything but I spin my own On a Lathe Or with course to emery sand paper
.
Since tention on the thread is needed and the tools may be hard to find (I live pretty close to a fly tieing store)
If that is a problem you may use a book (Put the wrapping thread inside of a book to give tention).
Pick out your guides (Most are made with nickle. As one person suggested they are made of stanless steel (I have no idea where a person finds these. they are made of nickle) and the tip top is epoxied on with a product that is half and half Rod building glue (One part is glue and the other part is herdener. .
The most needed portions are the solvent to “set” the wrappings hard and must dry.
The rod heel is made already and cost in between $5 and up.
Then the handle which the classic which i like best is cork but I am sure there is also a rubber kind (My favorite is the cork kind so i don’t bother with it too much)
The blanks you use are according to your type of fishing (e.g., a spring creek one I would use a #6 blank about 7 -71/2 feet long I am a fly fishing purist)
But a good Bass one is 81/2 one (or whichever suits your fancy).
Building rods is hated in he fishing section I have no idea why.
I bring it up and people (I have had 5 tds just for mentioning it)
I don’t understand why people hate me for bringing it up
The biggest problem you will run into is finishing off a wrap . This is done by “sort of” Half hitch (meaning the finishing wrap goes undeneath the wrappings).
I will admit first rod looked ugly But I still use it.
Now I only build my rods and I only tie my flies. It is not hard and is nicer than most of the factory junk I have seen
The history of it is bamboo.Which is deemed as too heavy but that is sort of the point. I have used a Bamboo that is very light weight
next came fiberglass. Which I admit I don’t really care for that but not saying everyone must because i don’t. It is a preferance. Then graphite was big. and next boron. . the most used and most preferesd is graphite. Bamboo is the most prestegious from every fly fisher I know.
Like I said I have mentioned rod building in here and have receieverd a not so great welcome and I don’t unserstand why.
But aside from that note A school project of mine waa s fly tieing because i tie my own and about five or six businesses and Build rods for the same.
